HAPPIEST MOOD AND LIFE FACET

There are many stories attached to a man's life that I have come to a realization of latterly. At a kid age you aspire with just words what you want to be in life by mare looking at what you feel is the the best at that moment. I wanted to be a doctor initially ...Smiles.

It starts from the primary school when you can choice what you would like to be without any iota of doubt, then one proceeds to secondary school level when education gets tougher then you tend to change a little bit  when you know you capability.

Finally when you get admitted into the University after so many years of seeking admission then the dreams of ones come either true or not true cos you ply the path of which ever course you were admitted for in the college. I got my admission to study Surveying and Geoinformatics tho!. There is more to life at the college because what you learn in the college may help you in future, many don't even work inline with the profession they studied in school which means after school , many will choose so many different path. And so many be successful and some may not. I work in firm that does a different thing from what I studied and so for three years I was actually useless to them but I was being paid doing nothing but not until after these years spent I realized that I have to change my course because I must be successful....Story continues in the next edition

How To Make Wise Career Decisions

How To Make Wise Career Decisions

career decisions
“Because I’m thinking in a broader way, I feel like I am able to make better decisions” – Takafumi Horie
VENTURES AFRICA – When the subject of career decisions or choices comes to mind, one fundamental fact must be accepted – A choice is, most often, nothing more than a best guess—a hopeful step in a new direction. You can only be sure of the right path when you have enough information of both risk and benefits. As it pertains to career decisions, I find the concept of ‘career anchors’ very instructive and directional.
The concept of ‘career anchors is not a completely new concept, I believe. Though, many may not be aware of it. I encountered this concept sometime back and it was a ‘light bulb moment’ for me. All of a sudden, basis for career choices became clearer to me just like the dawn of a new day!
Career anchors’ became renowned by the original research of MIT Professor Emeritus Edgar H. Scheinin the mid-1970s. Schein described ‘career anchors’ as a self-concept formed by individuals, which often affect their career preferences or choices. He found that an understanding of ‘career anchors’ would illuminate how people make career choices. Basically, career anchors are perceived areas of competence, motives and values related to work choices or aspirations. Once you know your career anchor, it would help you get a good sense of who you are and what you are after in your career and life. It aims to represent your real self!
Career anchors only evolve as one gain occupational and life experience. However, once the self-concept has been formed, it functions as a stabilizing force, hence the metaphor of “anchor,” and can be thought of as the values and motives that the person will not give up if forced to make a choice. Most of us are not aware of our career anchors until we are forced to make choices pertaining to self-development, family, or career. Yet it is important to become aware of our anchors so that we can choose wisely when choices have to be made.
In Schein’s original research from the mid-1970’s he identified that most people’s self-concept revolved around five anchor categories reflecting basic values, motives and needs. A follow-up study in the 1980’s identified three additional anchor categories making it eight anchor categories in all.
Find below a summarized explanation for each anchor categories for you to do a preliminary career anchors self-assessment.
 - Autonomy/independence – they desire work situations that provide maximum freedom to independently pursue career interests; they need and want control over work; can’t tolerate other people’s rules or procedures; independent consulting and contract work would be a good fit for these people.
 - Security/stability – they are concerned with long-run stability and security of employment; motivated by calmness and consistency of work; don’t like to take chances, and are not risk-takers; stable companies are best bets.
 - Technical-functional Competence – they are intrinsically motivated by the work itself, its technical aspects, and the desire for enhanced technical competence and credibility; in other words, it is the actual work they are concerned with not the organization or the overall mission of their work. They are the specialists.
 - General Managerial Competence – they view specialization as limiting; primarily want to manage or supervise people; enjoy motivating, training and directing the work of others; enjoy authority and responsibility; motivated by the opportunity to develop and use interpersonal and problem-solving skills to climb to general management levels. They are the generalists.
 - Entrepreneurial Creativity – they like the challenge of starting new projects or businesses, have lots of interests and energy, and often have multiple projects going at once; different from autonomy in that the emphasis is on creating new business.
 - Service or Dedication to a Cause – they are motivated by core values rather than the work itself; strong desire to make the world a better place; committed to the service of others. They find NGO jobs amusing.
 - Pure Challenge – they are motivated by the desire to overcome the odds, solve unsolved problems, and win out over competitors; conquering, problem solving; constant self-testing.
 - Life Style – wants to integrate personal, family and career needs; have a high need to balance work and the rest of life; enjoy work, but realizes that work is just one of many parts of life that are important.
What category do you fall under? The whole essence of this post is to awaken your awareness of this concept and for you to get better informed understanding of how it affects your career choices now and later in your career journey.

COULD FAILING SAVE OUR NATION

Could Failing Save Our Nation

I get the whole prosperity thing, I really do. But whatever happened to contentment?

Whatever happened to being thankful and grateful for what you have right now instead of perpetually clamoring for more?
...
When is enough enough? When do you say, okay, I’m rich enough now. Lemme start to be content and start to help the less privileged?

It does not exist! That time…not for everyone at least.

A very small percentage of the world’s population controls half the wealth in the whole world. Truth is, nobody hands it to them and they know the price they paid to get there. But you, yes you! You want a private jet and you still want to sleep for 8 hours a day, and then spend 5 hours praying. Pray tell, how much time is left for you to work?

But you, yes you! You want a private jet and you still want to sleep for 8 hours a day, and then spend 5 hours praying. Pray tell, how much time is left for you to work? You want to graduate with 1st class and you spend 6 hours at the prayer garden, and then 2 hours studying. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t underestimate the power of prayer. But for me, the meaning of that word is a sincere and truly needed call for help…Help will always come. God has never failed. But He knows our needs abi? What if he has answered your prayer before you even opened your mouth? What if you were just supposed to study more, play less and just work a bit more?

We all want to go to heaven, but no one wants to die. Please tell me, how are you planning to get there? We want electricity, but no one wants to pay light bill according to how they consume electricity. Yeah, they introduced the cards, but we’ve all found ways to cheat anyway. We want better education but yet we pay peanuts for university education.

Our Federal University fees are basically what my 2 year old niece pays for a month in kindergarten. There are only 14 people in her class and so she learns quite well. Now, me, a 19 year old engineering student pays N45,000 a year. Pray tell, what kind of education do you think I’m getting?

My mates at Private Universities are worse off in my opinion. Exorbitant fees for the barest minimum!

When will we strike the balance Nigeria?
When will we stop short changing ourselves?

This semester, I did really badly in an exam. The lecturer is uninspiring and I don’t think he knows what he’s teaching to be frank. And I know that because I don’t struggle as much with other courses. Truth be told, because of the fact that I had no idea about what was going on in the course, I just accepted my faith and I didn’t even bother to study. And when the exam came, I really didn’t write anything.

But in my school, these lecturers who are usually very busy doing God knows what don’t mark the scripts themselves, so there’s a chance that you can bribe those markers to upgrade your score. For this course the cost for that service was 10K. I wanted to block, God knows I did, but I didn’t have 10K to give anyone so I didn’t.

My biggest fear, is that I think I would have paid if I had that money.

And that’s our problem right there. Us.

We refuse to clamor for change sometimes because the status-quo suits us in some way, it helps us not do our best. Maybe if we paid more on our light bills we might have electricity? Oh yeah, there’s corruption, so we can’t pay taxes, the government officials will “chop” it, but have you ever paid? No!

We complain about the situation of our higher institutions and yet still want to pay 20K fees. Why? People’s designer glasses cost more than 20K, why should that be the tuition at a federal university for a professional course for a year? Yes, we have oil money, so what?

The schools are underfunded, and the teachers are uninspiring. I see my classmates and I know it would take the grace of God for us not to continue this cycle our parents started. God and some hurtful truths…truth that if we are allowed to taste the bitter pill of failure we would not allow it to happen again.

Is it too much to ask for an educational system that I don’t have to struggle with my conscience to decide if I should pay to pass or not? That maybe if we sweated and paid tax, and knew that those “leaders” out there are stealing our sweats, we wouldn’t let them get away with it. Because now they steal oil money, that isn’t anyone’s really, so it doesn’t really hurt, its called the “national” cake. Well, in case you haven’t heard, the cake will soon finish. Should we wait for it to finish and then start to scramble madly for alternatives or should we make sure that the little that’s left is used correctly and we play our individual roles too? Each of us has a role to play, me too.

Maybe failing that course and re-writing the exam will be my own sacrifice, my first step. Because Nigeria is us. She won’t change if we don’t.

IT IS NOT THAT AMERICA IS RICHER, THEY ARE SMARTER

IT IS NOT THAT AMERICA IS RICHER, THEY ARE SMARTER

Ask the Average American to pay for 2 years rent up front….he can’t and he won’t. But for Nigeria we have no option…that’s the way our system is set up.

Imagine what we could do as a country if Nigerian’s could make monthly payments?

Do you know how much money will be freed up in our economy? Do you know how many people would be able to afford cars and homes? Do you know how the middle class will grow, since more people have more money to spend? Do you know how many more jobs will be generated from people having more money to invest in their ideas? Do you know how much easier life would be for a family that has to find money for a month, versus an entire year!

But instead we have a government that fails to see this as important. Instead they fight the battle of speeches and visions, but lose the battle of smartness…If only our government would focus on this glaring loop hole, we could instantaneously increase our economy 11 fold, which is basically 11-months of free money that we would gain when Nigerian’s can make payments monthly. Simple concept…but this is Nigeria…where the solutions are easy but the excuses are plenty
